Container lines achieved net sales of USD 26.8 billion in Q3 and this result may be slightly worse in Q4 2025. Sales growth of 164% compared to the second quarter of the previous year is the result of the third quarter of 2024. The economic results of container ship operators in 2024 are the reverse of the trend observed in 2023, when profits fell during the year as the disruptions from the pandemic eased, ending with a loss of USD 700 million in the fourth quarter – notes John D. McCown, an independent shipping expert. Good results in 2024 despite disruptions on the main liner connections should not be surprising. Disruptions on the main liner connections have strengthened container ship operators instead of weakening them. This happened despite higher operating costs for container carriers, which were forced to redirect tonnage around the Cape of Good Hope after the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and after reduced capacity in the Panama Canal.

Oil and gas traders improved their sanctions evasion in 2024 and introduced new methods of transporting energy resources by sea in 2024. A report by analyst firm Windward indicates that new methods of illegal activity, including the destruction of underwater infrastructure and the emergence of new flags of convenience, have made it more difficult to monitor illegal oil and LNG trade. In addition to illegal operations related to the transport of oil and gas from Russia, sabotage actions in the Baltic Sea have been added, involving damage to undersea cables and critical infrastructure elements, according to the Windward Trade Patterns & Risk Insights Report for Q4 2024. According to the data provided there, the monthly average of illegal activities increased by 29% in 2024 compared to 2023. The new method of sabotage includes voyages to Russian ports in the Baltic Sea, followed by illegal activity in the Baltic Sea. Windward calculated that β€œcompared to Q4 2023, the sequence of illegal behaviors increased by 187% in Q4 2024, which excludes seasonality.”

Is the Baltic Sea on the course for a β€œhot war”? Is Poland, together with other NATO countries, able to ensure the security of the coast, communication routes, ports and infrastructure, and installations of strategic importance? It has been known for about 50 years that a nuclear power plant will be built on the Polish coast. It has been known for about a quarter of a century that offshore wind energy installations will be built in the waters of the Exclusive Economic Zone. Everyone knows that there are power connections, communication cables, and pipelines on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Are they safe? Certainly not. So the most important question arises: why have politicians and decision-makers not prepared the law and the forces of protection and defense that would ensure real and comprehensive security of wind farms and the infrastructure associated with them?

The maritime and port transport sector is going through a dangerous turning point in light of automation, digitization and artificial intelligence with the new rules of the International Maritime Organization. Do you agree with us and what are the features of this sector in the future in your opinion? Automation, digitalization and artificial intelligence facilitate trade. IMO regulations do not always keep up with the development of new technologies. Innovations in maritime transport allow for the optimization of maritime transport on a global scale. This provides savings for shipowners, freight forwarders and ultimately for consumers. β€œDigital twins” and virtual logistics communities can help cope with supply chain disruptions. Digital twins have already entered the wide waters and are taking over seaports. Attacked by the Covid-19 pandemic, maritime logistics began to introduce IT tools on a large scale to handle connections between continents. The war in Ukraine and the circumvention of sanctions have incorporated satellite and AI systems into the port and ship surveillance system on an unprecedented scale. Tracking β€œshadow” ships and STS operations in seaports and anchorages has become common. Thanks to this, we know that not only Russian ports and ships but also ports and operators from countries that have introduced these sanctions are involved in bypassing sanctions and bans. Missile attacks in the Red Sea region caused global general cargo and bulk cargo routes to have to be adjusted again. Ships returned to the connection from the times of the great discoveries to the routes followed by Cook, Magellan and traders of tea and other goods from India and the Far East. Disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine and terrorist attacks (also in the West African region) generate further problems. They are related to changes in the logistics of bunkering and crew exchange, as well as the management of operational processes. First of all, they cause disruptions in meeting cruise schedule deadlines. This in turn disrupts the logistics of maritime hub ports based on harmonized connections at sea and on land.
