Transforming Waste into Affordable Energy: The WASTE BATTERIES Project

Submitted by Anna Marytová on 26 February 2025

WASTE BATTERIES

In an era where sustainable energy solutions are paramount, the "Low-cost, industrial energy storage from waste lead-acid and alkaline batteries" (WASTE BATTERIES) project stands out as a beacon of innovation. Supported by the INGENIOUS consortium through the INGENIOUS Innovation grant, this initiative has made significant strides in repurposing waste materials into valuable energy storage systems.

Project Overview

The WASTE BATTERIES project brought together a consortium of forward-thinking SMEs:

  • Global Quantum Sp. z o.o. SK
  • ASH Sp. z o.o.
  • Zakład Usług Komunalnych "Hak" Stanisław Burczyński Działalność Gospodarcza

These partners collaborated to address the dual challenges of waste management and affordable energy storage.

Achievements and Innovations

Over a year of intensive research, the project team accomplished the following:

  • Battery Regeneration Technology: Developed and refined methods to rejuvenate spent lead-acid batteries, extending their lifecycle and utility.
  • Voltage Balancing Methods: Implemented techniques to balance cell voltages, ensuring optimal capacity and performance of the storage systems.
  • Safety Enhancements: Designed robust casings for high-voltage energy storage, prioritizing safety in industrial applications.
  • Advanced Management Systems: Integrated a Battery Management System (BMS) that optimizes performance based on energy consumption profiles and available renewable sources, such as photovoltaic installations.

Remarkably, these innovations have culminated in energy storage solutions at just one-third the cost of new systems.

Industry Impact and Future Prospects

The project's success has garnered attention from various sectors. Companies have expressed interest in installing these cost-effective storage systems, while others with surplus spent batteries see potential in this sustainable solution. This interest underscores the project's dual benefit: effective waste management and the creation of scalable, profitable energy storage products.

Testimonial from WASTE BATTERIES

"Our passion lies in finding sources of affordable energy for businesses, both from renewable sources and waste, as well as optimizing energy consumption in companies. Affordable energy means increased competitiveness, better financial health for businesses, and the creation of new jobs." – WASTE BATTERIES Team
