EU-India Collaboration on Waste to Renewable Hydrogen: Horizon Europe Call for Proposals
GBI is seeking European partners to co-develop a consortium for the Horizon Europe Call focused on Waste to Renewable Hydrogen, in partnership with Indian stakeholders. This coordinated call is part of the EU-India Strategic Partnership and the EU-India Trade and Technology Council’s (TTC) Working Group on Green and Clean Energy Technology. It aims to strengthen bilateral research and innovation on sustainable hydrogen production through the valorisation of biogenic wastes.
Call Details
Call ID: HORIZON-CL5-2025-02-D2-08
Closing Date: 2 September 2025 (17:00 CET)
Total Budget
- MNRE: INR 90 Crore (for Indian consortium)
- Horizon Europe: EUR 10 million (for EU consortium)
- Maximum Funding per Project: MNRE: INR ~45 Crore per project
- Horizon Europe: EUR ~5 million per project (Up to 2 coordinated projects may be funded)
Expected Outcomes
- Improved sustainability, safety, and affordability of hydrogen production from biogenic waste
- Expanded renewable hydrogen technology portfolio for EU and Indian developers
- Strengthened cross-border R\&D collaboration and knowledge-sharing
- Enhanced joint innovation ecosystem on biogenic Waste to Renewable Hydrogen (W2rH)

Projects must address:
- Advanced catalytic conversion and process intensification
- Feedstock assessment, pretreatment, and mobilization strategies
- Life-cycle sustainability analysis (environmental, economic, social)
- Comparative cost analysis with existing hydrogen technologies
- Safety assessments and hydrogen risk management planning
- Joint R&D execution between India and Europe with aligned timelines and milestones
This call represents a major step forward in implementing the EU-India Strategic Partnership on clean energy technologies. Joint proposals must clearly demonstrate the added value of coordinated collaboration and include cross-referenced activities between the EU and Indian sides.
